Abuja, Nigeria – July 2, 2025 – Nigeria’s political scene is buzzing today as key opposition figures converge, signalling a potential realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections. The formation of a broad opposition coalition, spearheaded by prominent personalities, dominated headlines, even as other significant developments unfolded across the nation.
Opposition Coalition Takes Shape Amidst PDP Warnings
The political spotlight is firmly on the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which is being unveiled today as the platform for a new opposition coalition. Former Senate President David Mark has reportedly resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after 27 years to join this burgeoning alliance, with former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola accepting the role of Interim National Secretary for the ADC.
The gathering at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja saw the attendance of several high-profile opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi. This development has sent ripples through the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), while the PDP has issued stern warnings to its members against joining the new coalition, threatening “decisive action” against defectors. Peter Obi is also said to have submitted a single-tenure proposal to the opposition coalition, indicating strategic discussions are underway regarding future political frameworks.
However, the unveiling of the ADC as the coalition’s platform wasn’t without hitches, as reports emerged that an Abuja hotel cancelled the booking for the unveiling venue, prompting strong reactions from opposition politicians.
Economic Growth and Monetary Policy in Focus
In economic news, Nigeria’s economy is estimated to have grown by approximately 3.7% in the first half of 2025. This growth is largely attributed to improved business conditions and an increase in oil production. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has also applauded the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) tight monetary policy, hailing it as a crucial factor in driving the nation’s economic stability.
Further economic reforms are anticipated, with expectations of a potential 150-200 basis points rate cut in 2025 by the CBN, and a further 200-250 basis points cut in 2026, aimed at stimulating further growth while keeping inflation in check.
Security Concerns and Regional Developments
Security remains a pressing issue in various parts of the country. Reports indicate that at least 14 Nigerian soldiers were killed in clashes with hundreds of gunmen in north-central Niger State. In a separate tragic incident, the Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru, has condemned the killing of 13 Ebonyi indigenes in Anambra State, demanding a swift investigation into the barbaric act.
Meanwhile, on the political front in Plateau State, Nanloong Daniel of the APC has emerged as the new Speaker of the House of Assembly, following the resignation of the erstwhile Speaker, Gabriel Dewan. This change in leadership comes amidst ongoing efforts to stabilize the political climate in the state.
